When you hear the word ‘leader’, what person comes into your mind? Perhaps a brave statesman like Nelson Mandela. It could be an influential person from the past such as Winston Churchill or Abraham Lincoln. It might even be the new Prime Minister – or the old one, depending on your electoral preference!
How about leaders who you know personally – your kids’ sports coach, a teacher who inspired you, your mum, your boss?
How about yourself? Are you the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word leader? What kind of a leader are you? Do you even think of yourself as a leader?
We are all called to be leaders at some time in our lives. Even as a parent, you are a leader to your children. In your job, you are a leader of work culture.
Leadership means making choices – often difficult at first but easier and more and more beneficial over time. Here are five traits that all leaders demonstrate, traits that guarantee great results.
1 Showing, not telling
We’ve all heard the sayings ‘actions speak louder than words’, and ‘don’t do what I say, do what I do’. If you know someone whose words, instructions or commands don’t match up with their behaviour, you can’t believe a word they say, can you? … and it’s safe to assume, you don’t trust them.
When you’re in a leadership role, you have to check in with what you are doing.
Does it reflect what you say?
Do you talk about harmony in the workplace but have a hissy fit every time a deadline is missed?
Do you insist on punctuality but turn up five minutes late on occasion?
…People are watching you – scary but true!
People might listen to what you say, but they will remember what you do.
2 Listen before talking
As a leader, it’s tempting to tell your people how things are done. But logically, if you need to tell others how things are done, it means they’re not being done! So, why not find out why?
Leaders who listen learn more and develop better strategies and tactics for the next move onwards. Listening to others also engenders trust with others. And when you think about it, we have two ears but only one tongue – maybe there’s a reason for that!
3 Planning
You may be a ‘go with the flow’ type of person. Being calm is great but letting things pass you by in the hope that it will all turn out right in the end is seriously unproductive!
Planning can be as micro-detailed as organising what flavour of sausages to order for the Christmas barbecue or as ‘big picture’ as who you want your business to merge with in ten years’ time.
What sort of planner are you?
Recognise your style and bring alongside you others who plan in different ways. Collaborate with them and introduce into your planning group those you intend to delegate to.
That way, you all buy into the same vision.
4 Forgiving and taking responsibility
Forgiveness is not often spoken about, but it is a vital trait for a leader to cultivate. Things are just a whole lot better if you can forgive others immediately. We’re all humans and therefore slip-ups will be made.
Forgiving doesn’t mean that due process shouldn’t be followed. If, say, OH&S requirements are not followed or production schedules not adhered to, there are serious consequences. However, taking responsibility for one’s actions or mistakes, especially if you are the leader, is not a sign of weakness but is liberating for all.
5 Showing you value others
Let’s be honest, work can be boring.
Your kids’ attitudes can wear you down.
There are days, aren’t there, where you just want to scream, ‘Stop, world, and let me off!’
A little appreciation will go a long way. Why not show the people you lead that you value them? It could be something as simple as a certificate with ‘Best Worker of the Week’ printed on it. Many businesses celebrate people’s birthdays with a cake at morning tea. The Christmas party could be a time where appreciation is shown in the form of a small gift.
If you cultivate these five traits, you can become an awesome leader!

Ever think about your fitness? Chances are you do… in some way or another.
But I’m guessing, that when you think of ‘being fit’, you think physically.
I’ll even go so far as to say that your awareness and focus around being ‘emotionally fit’ is not even a thought…?
How’d I go, is that true?
Fitness. There’s physical and there’s emotional.
Emotional Fitness is based on the relationship you have with yourself, and it can be measured by the quality of your relationship with uncertainty…
The more emotionally fit you are, the greater your ability to handle ‘hard’ moments better…because you can see things more accurately.
You’re not clouded by mistrust, rigid rules, swayed perspective, lack of boundaries…
Instead…
* you are flexible in your thinking – more ‘fascinated’ than offended
* you see things more clearly
* you trust yourself and
* you have self-respect
These traits, this ability to be emotionally fit, shows through an increased knowledge of who you are.
You are also low in drama and know when and how to language your truth.
You’re open to others; show more compassion, and every day you move closer to being in complete alignment with your values.
It feels good.
And it’s a wonderful place to lead from.
It brings objectivity.
It brings the ability to adjust, even lean-in to, uncertainty.
Leaning-in will make it easier to feel inspired and creative; to see opportunity in new experiences, in an uncertain world, in a workplace that’s filled with change.
For some people, when they are surrounded by uncertainty, they fill their world with comfort…
Anything that makes them feel safe, secure and reduces never-ending internal questioning.
Another word for comfort is certainty.
So, there is a big possibility that you and/or your team have overcompensated with comfort and certainty in your worlds.
Comfort clouds;
- outside the box thinking
- the yearning to feel challenged and
- the desire to create.
Staying in your comfort zone, allowing this kind of thinking and feelings to foster in your workplace will surely be stifling and choking your bottom-line results.
It’s time to encourage greatness.
It’s time to bring back some spark, to lighten up, to lean-in to self, to move towards the state of becoming emotionally fit.
Here’s some easy steps that you and your team can follow;
- to stimulate originality and expression
- to go back to basics and
- to EMBRACE THE UNCERTAINTY of this new world we live in!
Say Yes and then work out how.
The key is to make up your mind quickly and change it slowly. When you say YES, it confirms you’re worth it. You will then back yourself to figure out the rest. This way you’ll consistently discover that you’ve got more to give, and you have yet another level within.
Doing this effectively will form a belief within yourself that you can draw on at times of uncertainty – this will carry you through. By believing in yourself and trusting your senses, you’re more likely to give it a go in the areas that you may not think you know so well.
- DO ONE THING EVERY DAY TO GET YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
Could be as simple as speaking to someone you wouldn’t usually, going down a slide at the park (with or without the kids!), go bare foot on a trail walk.
- DO THE LESS PREDICTABLE THING
Not to shock others, but to surprise yourself. This will build your inner trust.
- CHOOSE A MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND LOOSEN UP –
“I have no idea how to do this, yet I’m going to have a good ole crack at it and work out where I suck”.
Through striving forward and giving it a go, we discover where we struggle and where the gaps are for us to move forward.
“Fantastic, I now know what I have to learn and where to progress”
The most important journey one can take is the journey of self-discovery.
If you were to instill this importance into your business values, you’ll see a team that’s grows together and a business future that will certainly look brighter.
Commit to building a resilient team that promotes individual greatness yet moves seamlessly together as one… this is where the magic happens.
Please, get in touch if you’re keen to know more on how to become emotionally fit and how to bring this into your personal and/or business world.

It’s just on a year ago now that The Free Website Guys built my beautiful website for FREE!
I was four years into my business and ready for the next stage – a serious online presence! But to say that I was knowledgeable in the areas of marketing and tech, would be an understatement… and I wasn’t sure that the thousands of potential dollars spent on a site was going to be useful at that time.
And then a gorgeous white horse came riding in… on a FB Ad… in the form of The Free Website Guys!
Too good to be true was my initial thought.. but worth sussing out 😉
From initial contact, I felt supported and in good hands.
I appreciate quality and I resonated with the application process… happy to share and prove that both myself and my business, are worthy of a free, involved service, such as this.
And The Free Website Guys didn’t disappoint in continuing quality – in service and design.
So, remember I said that I’m not too ‘up’ with technology and marketing?
Well… I had my fair share of challenges in set-up;
- I hadn’t previously set up a full Google & G-mail account
- I couldn’t work out the WordPress installation
- I struggled with access to the host and linking my existing domain name
- I wasn’t sure which template would be best for my business
- I wasn’t fully prepared with logo or email set-up
Not a problem!!
With great professionalism, I was supported through friendly informative emails and specific videos that showed me step-by-step, the processes I needed to follow.
Sven was patient, obliging and systematic, as was the whole development of my site.
Information was shared step-by-step with lots of options on how to personalise my site and clear communication to ensure it happened efficiently!
I didn’t feel rushed.. or dumb! 😆.. with my seemingly dozens of questions and queries.
The team even shared other useful marketing browser extensions and apps that would support my business overall… Loom for example has totally enhanced my client engagement since The Free Website Guys first introduced it to me.
Their streamlined, expert process made building my site easy and fun.
As an added bonus, The Free Website Guys set my site up with daily automatic offsite backups, Google Analytics and Google Search Console… followed by a handover document and video that showed me exactly how to add, change and move content around.
Finally… they set me up with linked business emails and over a month later, still answered (happily!) my questions regarding information produced through the Google Analytics etc
If you’re looking for a new website and wish to work with professional, knowledgeable, and friendly builders, look no further.
Get in touch with Sven and the team here – you can be sure you’ll be looked after.
The process was easy! … as easy as it can be to set up a site if you have limited tech knowledge hahaha.
I learned a lot along the way about adding and creating copy, and marketing overall and I love that I now have the knowledge to change anything at any time in my site like adding articles and content as I wish – more ways to save money!
The costs were minimal – I paid only for hosting and any extras like emails that I requested.
And now??… My site runs so very smoothly, I have recently re-engaged the team to look after my back-end security and updates ongoing.
Amazing all round… thanks to The Free Website Guys!
